Trialside Healthcare

The Directorate of Health Services in Kashmir has introduced an innovative solution to provide immediate health care to Amarnath pilgrims: pony ambulances.
A pony ambulance is essentially a small, mobile medical unit carried by a pony, equipped with an oxygen cylinder, medicines, and life-saving drugs.
These ambulances are managed by a three-member team, including a pony handler (pony walla), a pharmacist, and a health worker.
Pilgrims travel to the holy cave via two routes: Baltal in Ganderbal district and Pahalgam in Anantnag district. Health authorities have deployed pony ambulances along both these routes.
The cave shrine, located at an elevation of 12,756 feet, is surrounded by challenging terrain and varying elevations. Many pilgrims, especially the elderly, often suffer from altitude sickness or other medical issues and need immediate medical attention. Although 100-bed hospitals are set up at Baltal and Chandanwari base camps, providing medical assistance along the entire route to the cave is difficult. To address this, the health authorities in Kashmir have rolled out the pony ambulances.
Dr. Mir Mushtaq, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir, explained that the idea was conceived in 2022, and ponies with oxygen cylinders and medicines were deployed at various locations.
“But this year, for the first time, we introduced the pony ambulances in an organized manner,” said Dr. Mushtaq.
He added that skilled paramedic teams were deployed with the pony ambulances.
“We have also given basic training to pony handlers on how to manage oxygen cylinders,” Dr. Mushtaq added.
Since the beginning of the yatra, over 2,000 pilgrims have received medical assistance from the pony ambulances.
